On 9th October 2024, we officially opened the doors to our Short Mat Season at Denham Bowls Club, and what a fantastic start it was! The opening night featured a friendly round-robin tournament, with four teams of triples competing for early bragging rights. While some bowls were a bit wild as players adjusted their touch after the outdoor season, there were plenty of moments of sheer brilliance on the mat.
After a fun-filled evening of competition, Terry Dyett, Jean Simpson, and Terry Alcock emerged victorious—congratulations to the winning team!
What Is Short Mat?
For those unfamiliar, Short Mat Bowls offers all the fun and skill of lawn bowls but in a more compact and fast-paced format—perfect for those cold winter months. Played indoors on a shorter mat, the game features a unique twist: the “Christmas Blocker”. Positioned right in the middle of the mat, it acts as a barrier, making each bowl that much more challenging. Every time a player strikes the blocker, they’re fined 10p—adding a bit of extra fun and friendly banter to the game!
Short Mat is all about precision and control, but don’t be fooled by its size—the matches are lively, loud, and full of energy, with drinks in hand and plenty of laughter echoing through the club.
