The Founding of Denham Bowls Club: A Historical Reflection
In 1920, Lt. Col. Way, the owner of Denham Place and the unofficial Lord of the Manor, decided to leave Denham and sell off his estate. With a generous spirit, he wanted to leave the residents of Denham a lasting gift – a piece of land dedicated to all sports. Alongside facilities for football, cricket, and tennis, a two-rink bowls green was constructed. However, no organized club existed until a retired police sergeant and local parish councillor, Ernest J. Grieg, took the initiative.
On Friday, April 11th, 1924, Ernest J. Grieg convened a meeting at The Falcon Inn with the intention of forming an organized bowls club for all interested men in the community. During this first meeting, it was proposed that the headquarters of the club should be The Falcon Inn. Lt. Col. Way was elected as the club’s first president, and since Ernest had convened the meeting, he was elected as the first secretary—a role he would fulfil for the next nine years.
Ernest J. Grieg is therefore considered to be our founding member, and his vision and dedication have left a legacy that continues to thrive today.

Our club has a 6-rink bowling green, which is one of the best in Buckinghamshire We also offer short mat bowling in our clubhouse during the winter months. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a newcomer to the sport, our Club is equipped to meet your needs and provide an enjoyable experience.
We have dedicated men’s and ladies’ changing rooms for both home and visiting teams and, after a game, our fully licensed bar comfortably accommodates 50+ guests and offers a good range of draught beers and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at low, club prices. Our fully equipped kitchen and outdoor barbecue area are available for regular social events.
Our spacious car park accommodates 20+ vehicles.
At Denham Bowls Club, the safety and well-being of everyone on our premises are among our top priorities. We have a DBS-certified Safeguarding Officer whose role is to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all adults and children who visit our facilities. We also have trained First Aiders and an on-site defibrillator. Our clubhouse is equipped with fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and other essential safety features, ensuring a safe and secure environment at all times.
